Band HistoryThe West Elgin Community Band has undergone many changes since it was founded in 1991. The West Elgin Adult Band was established about 1991 by Mike and Patty Letovsky who were school music teachers in the area. the original members were parents of children in the grade 7 and 8 instrumental music programme. Jack Barnes continued on as Director in the mid 90’s. The exact dates are hidden deep within a time vault! The current director, Sharon Little, joined as a band member in 1996, hoping to find a place to play. When Jack went on to other things, Sharon picked up the baton and since January 1997 has been the Musical Dictator. Every few years she starts a Beginnners’ Band, where she teaches anyone who wants to learn a band instrument, from the first note on up. Several years ago we invited teens into the band and changed the name to the West Elgin Community Band. As of July 2006, the band has approximately 30 members, ranging in age from teens to septagenarians. |
